Harlan Coben returns to Netflix: after Intimidation and Innocent, is the new series worth a look?

Netflix released the series Double Trap online on January 1, which marks its new collaboration with the king of thrillers, Harlan Coben.

What is it about ?

When Maya, a former soldier, suddenly sees her husband on a spy camera whom she thought was murdered, she discovers a murderous conspiracy rooted deep in the past.

Is it worth a look?

Harlan Coben and Netflix, it’s an ongoing affair. For his 7th collaboration with the streaming platform, the author returns with a new adaptation of one of his novels, Double Trap, released in 2016.

The American giant did not choose the date of January 1 at random to put the 8 episodes online. Subscribers have always responded to binge Harlan Coben’s series. The recent successes of Innocent (Spain side), Gone Forever (France side) and Intimidation (UK side) have proven this.

If Double Trap hasn’t yet reached the weekly top 10, it won’t be long before it does. Because all the ingredients are present to keep the spectators in suspense: a gripping thriller, mystery and answers given drop by drop until the final resolution.

This makes for an entertaining program that fills the days or evenings well during the holidays.

And it stops there. If Harlan Coben’s novels are always hits, it’s because the author knows how to take care of his narration, play with the viewer and deliver his information in dribs and drabs. A quality that we unfortunately do not find in his television productions.

If some stand out – like Innocent – Double Trap is a fairly average, classic and conventional thriller. We will stay until the end of the 8 episodes to know the final word.

The fault is a rather unconvincing casting – Michelle Keegan, Richard Armitage (who seems confined to B series) and Adeel Akhtar in the lead -, an uninspired production and some rather strange scriptwriting choices (which wants us to believe that the heroine is a former soldier?).

All that remains is the final episode, quite short, where the writers take the complete opposite view of Harlan Coben’s novel. The author himself teased a shocking ending, we can at least congratulate them for keeping their promises.

If Double Trap is a success, then we haven’t heard the last of Harlan Coben and Netflix.
