It was one of the high profile events of all time. On May 19, 2018, in St. George’s Chapel in Windsor, Prince Harry married his beloved Meghan Markle. A wedding broadcast on television channels around the world, and watched by more than two billion viewers – that of William and Kate had attracted a billion curious, while the union of Charles and Diana had gathered 750 million. A dream royal wedding, to which all the biggest stars were invited. But almost three years later, on March 7, 2021, the couple made a startling revelation.
During their shock interview with Oprah Winfrey on CBS, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex panicked the Web by declaring to have married three days before the official ceremony. “No one knows. The vows we have framed in our room are those we took in our garden with the Archbishop of Canterbury ”, then indicated Meghan Markle.
“I would have committed a serious crime knowing that it was false ”
Since this revelation, some media claim that Meghan and Harry have lied about this secret union, taking as proof the marriage certificate dated May 19, 2018. Three weeks after the interview in question, the Archbishop of Canterbury finally agreed to give his version of the facts. But in the columns of the Italian newspaper La Repubblica, Tuesday March 30, 2021, the Reverend Justin Welby also seems to contradict the statements of Meghan Markle. “I had several private and pastoral meetings with the Duke and Duchess before their marriage ”, he first explained. “The legal marriage took place on Saturday [19 mai]. I signed the marriage certificate, which is a legal document, and I would have committed a serious crime if I had signed it knowing it was fake”, then assured the head of the Church of England, before insisting again: “The legal marriage took place on Saturday, but I will not reveal what happened in other meetings. ” The Archbishop of Canterbury obviously maintains professional secrecy, and will therefore keep these meetings confidential.
