Un affront for many Britons. As deciphered by a survey commissioned by The Times and spotted by BFMTV, 44% of the British public believes that Prince Harry should be stripped of his titles. An opinion that emerges a few weeks after the broadcast on Netflix of the documentary Harry & Meghanwhich shed light on the underside of leaving for the United States of the couple. Conversely, only 32% think that Prince William’s brother should keep his royal titles.

Another lesson from this study: the documentary benefited the couple formed by Prince William and Kate Middleton more than Harry and Meghan Markle. 44% of those surveyed said they had more sympathy for the future royal couple compared to only 17% for Meghan and Harry. Its dissemination has indeed had disastrous consequences on the popularity of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. 23% of respondents felt that the Netflix documentary had degraded the image they had of the couple, while only 7% had an improved image after watching it.

A poll influenced by the British press?

As pointed out The Times, these results can no doubt be partly explained by the fact that the British press had, the day after the broadcast of the documentary, largely supported William and Kate, and had gone so far as to point the finger at the “treachery” of Harry and Meghan towards the royal family. The Prince of Wales and his wife, nor King Charles III, had not commented on the Netflix documentary series. Nevertheless, more than half of Britons (51%) believe they should be invited to the coronation of King Charles III, scheduled for May 6, 2023.

As BFMTV recalls, Harry and Meghan announced that they would withdraw from the royal family in 2020 before definitively renouncing to exercise their responsibility a year later. Consequently, they no longer have official titles and functions, but nevertheless retain their title of Royal Highness. The Queen had also decided to withdraw Prince Harry’s military titles.
