Harry Potter: Not-So-Fantastic Beasts at the US Box Office

“Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secrets” had a disappointing debut at the American box office, far from the results of the previous two installments of the magical saga.

Warner Bros.

Lots of Americans absent for the start of the school year at Hogwarts. Unlike its solid French start on Wednesday, Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secrets gets off to a lackluster start at the US box office: the third installment of the magical franchise, which will expand the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, collected 43 million dollars between April 15 and 17, on more than 4,200 screens.

For comparison, the first opus had garnered more than $74 million in 2016 for its inaugural weekend (for a final total of $234 million), while the second chapter had collected $62 million (to end its American career around $159 million). It is therefore a very mixed result for Warner studios, which will have to rely on the international career of David Yates’ film to cover their production and marketing costs.

Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secrets sign to date, the fourth best start of 2022 at the American box office, behind The Batman ($134M), sonic 2 ($72M) and Uncharted ($44 million).
