According to some data collected by data.ai, Threads now has a fifth of Twitter’s weekly active user base worldwide, and 86 times that of Truth Social, Donald Trump’s social network and real competitor of the blue bird in the United States with one million weekly active users.
A drop in active users
However, despite this success, the data collected by Sensor Tower still showed a slight drop in the use of the application. The platform would have seen its number of daily active users drop by 20% between Saturday July 8 and the following Monday and Tuesday. The time spent on the application has also dropped by 50%, from 20 to 10 minutes.
“This early feedback indicates that despite the hype when it launched, Threads will struggle to carve out a place in most users’ social media routine.“, Anthony Bartolacci, general manager of Sensor Tower, told CNBC. “Meta support and integration with Instagram probably gives Threads a lot more flow than other services, but it will need a more compelling value proposition than just Twitter, but without Elon Musk“, he pointed out.
Still, Threads remains a strong competitor for Twitter. The application was very quickly downloaded millions of times. “It did so 5.5 times faster than the second-fastest app to date, Niantic’s Pokémon GO, which holds the title for biggest app launch since its debut in July 2016.”, according to data.ai. Concretely, Pokemon GO took 33 days to be downloaded 150 million times worldwide, where six days was enough for Threads.
It is in India that the new social network has been downloaded the most, accounting for a third of downloads. This is followed by Brazil (22%), the United States (16%), Mexico (8%) and finally Japan (5%). As a reminder, Threads is not accessible for users of the European Union due to European legislation on personal protections. Accounts created in Europe remain blocked, despite using a VPN.
