Haseloff has to rearrange himself: Greens exclude Kenya in Saxony-Anhalt

Greens exclude Kenya in Saxony-Anhalt

The Greens do not want to continue the coalition with the CDU and SPD in Saxony-Anhalt. Since black and red would have a slim majority, they would have to be the third wheel on the car. The FDP had previously argued similarly. This reduces the opportunities for Haseloff considerably.

The Greens are not available again in Saxony-Anhalt for a coalition with the CDU and SPD. The state board decided that evening, said state chairman Sebastian Striegel after a board meeting. After the clear election victory of Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff, the CDU and SPD would have a majority even without the Greens, but only one vote. This means that one of four coalition options for Haseloff is already off the table.

The Greens, however, are still open to a coalition with the CDU and FDP. Unlike the CDU and SPD, the CDU and FDP do not have a majority in the new Magdeburg state parliament. Haseloff had a good result, said Striegel. With black-red and black-yellow-green, he has two democratic options and must now decide with whom he wants to govern.

FDP does not want to be a spare tire either

In theory, a coalition of CDU, SPD and FDP would also be conceivable. The top candidate of the Liberals, Lydia Hüskens, had already expressed skepticism about participating in a coalition in which the votes of the FDP did not matter. The FDP will not be a “spare tire” or a “comfort partner” for such a coalition. The CDU had previously decided to conduct explorations with the SPD, FDP and the Greens. On Tuesday, the future parliamentary groups of the potential government parties want to meet in the state parliament and discuss how to proceed.

The CDU had surprisingly clearly won the state election in Saxony-Anhalt on Sunday. The Greens had only gained slightly. With 5.9 percent, they ended up behind the FDP, making them the smallest of six parliamentary groups in the newly elected state parliament in Magdeburg. In surveys, they were at nine percent at times.

SPD thinks black and red are conceivable

The FDP federal chairman Christian Lindner did not comment specifically on the formation of a government in Saxony-Anhalt. But he also pointed out that there is no coalition in Germany with a partner that is not needed by the majority. Lindner also saw the re-entry of the Liberals in the state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt as a signal for the federal election. To the address of the Greens, Lindner said that the broad center of the country could not be reached solely with the climate issue.

Despite the massive losses suffered by the Social Democrats in Saxony-Anhalt, the SPD leadership in Berlin had not ruled out a continuation of the coalition with the CDU in Magdeburg. In the morning, party leader Norbert Walter-Borjans was basically open to the fact that the SPD would remain in the CDU-led government coalition despite its fall to 8.4 percent. The decision on this lies with the regional association, he said. Walter-Borjans made it clear “that we will not evade the responsible safeguarding of a democratic majority in Saxony-Anhalt”.
