First arrests after racist agitation

Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho miss their penalties in the final of the European Football Championship. England missed its first major title since 1966, their social channels flooded with racist comments and emojis. The first arrests have now been made.

The police have arrested four people so far after the racist insults against England’s national soccer players Bukayo Saka, Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford. This was announced by the UK Football Policing Unit (UKFPU). The BBC meanwhile reports on five people.

The unit specializes in combating crime, violence and disruption at football events and works with the Ministry of the Interior. A special team of investigators is currently working through a large number of reports, the UKFPU told the PA news agency.

Instagram admitted mistakes

A man was arrested in Manchester on Wednesday for allegedly posting criminally relevant insults on the Internet. As the Greater Manchester Police announced, the 37-year-old turned himself into a police station in the north-west English metropolis. He remains in custody for the time being, the police said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Instagram boss Adam Mosseri told the BBC that there was a mistake on Instagram. He wrote on Twitterthat the filters wrongly did not remove the racially connotated emojis from the profiles of the three players because they would have rated them as benign. The error has now been corrected.

The three England pros failed on Sunday in the final of the European Football Championship against Italy on penalties. England lost the final. Saka, Sancho and Rashford were then racially insulted on social media.

The UK authorities opened an investigation into hate crimes. The UKFPU announced that numerous reports had been received from all over the country. It is likely that there will be more arrests in the next few weeks. Dozens of inquiries have been sent to social media companies.
