Haute-Savoie: two mountaineers fall 500 meters during an ascent, one dead and one seriously injured

It is a dramatic accident which took place this Saturday January 29 at the beginning of the afternoon during an ascent on the Tourette, in the Massif des Aravis and which our colleagues from the Dauphine Libere . A rope of two mountaineers, which was evolving on an icefall, on the north face of the Col du Var, unscrewed, causing the fall of the two mountaineers. An investigation was opened by the Annecy prosecutor’s office and entrusted to the soldiers of the Annecy high mountain gendarmerie.

The two victims, a man and a woman in their thirties, fell more than 500 meters, according to the regional daily. The man could not be resuscitated by the emergency services, which intervened quickly. His death was declared on the spot by the doctor in charge of the intervention. As for the second victim, who would be none other than the companion of the deceased man, she was taken care of in a state of absolute emergency. Unconscious and with a vital prognosis, she was quickly airlifted to Annecy hospital.

The alert was given around 2:10 p.m., according to the Dauphine Libere. Significant relief resources, including air, were immediately triggered with the deployment of a helicopter from the Choucas gendarmerie and Dragon civil security.

The circumstances of the tragedy remain an enigma at this stage. It is not known in particular whether the two mountaineers were victims of a failure of their equipment or whether the reason lies more in the mishandling of it.
