It’s official, Google announces the permanent closure of archived albums for the next month.

And probably it won’t change much for you, as the alternatives are relatively numerous.

Archived albums will soon close their doors…

At the end of last week, Google started sending an e-mail to inform its users of the imminent closure of one of its services. Starting July 19, archived albums will officially no longer be available. In other words, you have until this date to download a copy of your archived album data from Google Takeout.

In case you didn’t know, archived albums are albums in which the Mountain View giant kept all your photos shared or stored on Google products (Picasa, Blogger, etc.). However, as you will have understood, you will be unable to access it within a handful of days.

… and there is no shortage of alternatives

Anyway, you can now go to this link if you want to directly export a copy of your files from Takeout. You will be able to transfer them to Drive, Box, Dropbox or OneDrive. You can also decide to email yourself a download link if you prefer. In the note sent to its users, Google specified that the following content, available only in archived albums, would be removed:

  • In rare cases, small thumbnails and comments or “likes” associated with albums;
  • Certain Google Hangouts data from archived albums;
  • Background images imported into the Gmail theme switcher before 2018.

After July 19, users will still be able to access their content from their Google Chat, Google Photos or Blogger accounts.
