She captured the horror moment. On Monday May 29, 2023, a 26-year-old British tourist died struck by lightning as he was paddleboarding on a beach on the island of Rhodes, Greece. His girlfriend, who was on the beach at the time of the tragedy, was filming it with her phone. According to local newspaper Rodiaki, Scott Aaron Seddon was paddling a few dozen yards from the beach when the rain started to fall. Several tourists advised him to get out of the water, but the young man remained in the sea. He was struck by lightning shortly before 1:30 p.m.
Wander Machado, a 47-year-old footballer who witnessed the scene, then rushed to the aid of the young man. “As soon as I got next to him, I saw his face was submerged and he had bruises, he tells the Rodiaki. I knew every second counted so I started pulling him to the beach. I was afraid the same thing would happen to me if it continued to rain but I didn’t stop.” Once on the sand, the forties practiced first aid gestures. “The man was still alive, I could hear his heart and he had a pulse.“, he continues.

Alerted, the rescuers of the EKAV (the Greek equivalent of the SAMU) quickly arrived on the spot and carried out the gestures of cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The young man was rushed to Archangelos Health Center, where he sadly passed away. The Port Authority of Rhodes has been informed and announced the opening of an investigation.
As a reminder, it is recommended not to swim in stormy weather. Although water does not necessarily attract lightning, it is an excellent conductor (especially salt water) and increases the risk of lightning strikes.
