In the summer of 2022, a motorcyclist leaves a racing circuit and starts traveling at 240 hm/h on a Breton expressway. As soon as he was spotted by the police, his vehicle was immediately confiscated until he faced justice. However, he will only have to pay two fines of €250 for this record speeding violation.
On August 7, 2022, a Morbihan resident set off on departmental road 768, between Baud and Pontivy, aboard his motorcycle. Visibly in a hurry, he does not hesitate to rev up his engine, early and so much so that the local authorities do not take time to spot him. When the gendarmes of the motorized brigade (BMO) saw him speed past them, they immediately set off in pursuit.
They then see the biker “speed search position”, that is to say, he had “lying on the tank” so as to accelerate as quickly as possible. According to the gendarmes, once he reached it, the driver reached 240 km/h, on a road limited to 110 km/h. They signal him to stop. His motorcycle was immediately confiscated.

The thirty-year-old will wait until December 2023 to find himself before the Lorient police court. In theory, his case will not be difficult for the magistrates. In addition to his impressive speeding, finally held at 216 km/h by the BMO police, the court emphasizes that his motorcycle, a Yamaha model R6, is prohibited outside the circuits. In fact, it is not equipped with any license plate or indicators, mirrors or even headlights.
The defendant immediately admitted the facts, even admitting to not having paid attention to his speedometer. Despite all these elements against him, the court decided to punish him with two simple fines, of only €250. And for good reason: the BMO speed estimate cannot constitute a real radar-like reading, calibrated and verified every month. In addition to his two fines, the motorcyclist will therefore simply have to pay impoundment costs, up to €1,500.
A case which is reminiscent of the case of a driver, flashed at 275 km/h, who got away without any sanction by arguing that a radar cannot operate beyond 250 km/h .
