An American engineer has accumulated 3 permanent jobs to earn (much) more money. It’s not illegal in itself, but the most surprising thing is that no one has noticed anything.
Joseph (not his real name) is a 48-year-old engineer working in Texas. At the beginning of 2020, he earns a very good living, $117,500 per year, but found a new job paying $120,000. As he prepares to resign from the 1st, a colleague reminds him that he only has 4 to 5 hours of effective work per week Currently. Why not combine the two? Joseph gives it a try: his second job takes him 30 to 40 hours a week, it’s doable. Unfortunately, a sudden restructuring makes him fear a dismissal. He seeks and lands a third job.
Except that instead of stopping, Joseph’s 2nd job just gets easier. It only takes him 5 to 8 hours a week. His decision is made: he combines the 3 jobs. Each time Joseph starts a new job, he wants to leave the others to devote himself fully to it. Finally, he manages to juggle between all and triples his salary to reach €314,000/year. With the money, he repays the loan for his house, his car and that of his wife. On paper it sounds like a dream, but it takes a lot of organization.
How This Engineer Works 3 Jobs Without Anyone Realizing It
Obviously, Joseph is 100% teleworking, no offense to Amazon. As he works in IT (Information Technology), he knows very well that he will work less than 40 hours/effective week, contrary to what he was told in the interview. To manage the meetings, he marks in his schedules the hours devoted to other jobs as “private”. Sometimes, he must participate in several meetings at the same time and plugs in several headsets, taking care to cut off the camera from his PC.

Joseph also took a trusted colleague into his confidence in his first two jobs. They warn him when the combination could be a problem. Finally, the engineer works about 40h/week, plus a few hours some evenings. He admits to being in a slight burnout, but the financial comfort that his situation brings him motivates him to continue. In the USA, nothing prohibits having several full-time jobsas long as this does not violate a possible confidentiality clause.
