The Summer Game Fest was an opportunity to discover/rewatch a lot of games. It also offered a muscular cropping of Geoff Keighley by the Xbox and Blizzard teams.

The message too many

Now that the most important conferences are behind us, it is already time to take stock, calmly. Without much surprise, the Xbox conference won this “battle” conferences by imposing a show punctuated by quality announcements. Unfortunately, there is perhaps one who does not appreciate that the American giant has secured the presence of major publishers such as Konami, Electronics Arts or even Square Enix, leaving only crumbs at the Summer Game Fest. Geoff Keighley, who has already had to endure the poor ratings received by his event on X, finds himself heckled on social networks. The reason ? A message posted with his personal account which had the gift of annoying certain managers at Xbox.

The Gears of War trailer was therefore not CGI

Just after the Xbox Games Showcase, Geoff Keighley hastened to publish a message on X in order to temper the enthusiasm of fans of the American brand. He claims that the trailer for Gears of War E-Day, revealed at the very end of the event as a “one more thing”, is in fact just a computer-generated image video produced by Blur Studio using game elements from Unreal Engine 5. Immediately, the first questions arise in the answers. “People ask me if it’s CGI (…) because of this tweet” writes Jez Corden of Windows Central. “Glad you liked it!” adds Guy Welch, marketing director of Gears of War and Halo. “Blur developed the trailer hand-in-hand with The Coalition using Unreal Engine 5. The trailer is developed with in-game models, textures, environments, and objects that players will see in the final game” he replies.

Faced with the floods of quoting Geoff Keighley’s message. “Let me rephrase that a little better…the incredible Gears clip you just saw was FULL REALTIME. With models, textures, environments, etc. in real time” he says. “All in Unreal Engine 5. Saying it’s ‘Blur CGI’ diminishes all the technical achievements you probably didn’t notice” we read. And knock, Geoff! “Although it looks like Blur’s pre-rendered CG, it’s actually a real-time masterpiece using in-game assets and RT lighting in the same engine found on which game will work” he continues, before concluding, visibly annoyed: “I already see people saying ‘yes, it was cool, but it was a CG (pre-rendered) trailer’ because of this stuff”.

However, Geoff Keighley returned to the charge in a final message. “The Gears of War: E-Day trailer was created in collaboration with The Coalition, Blur Studios and GNet using models, textures and environments from the game, all captured in Unreal Engine 5. It n was not captured in real time as some have suggested” he writes, based on an article by GameSpot. Yes, that’s the very definition of “in-engine”, as it was written on the trailer during the conference.
