FC Bayern takes the next hit on the coaching market: Ralf Rangnick completely unexpectedly cancels the record champions and remains coach of the Austrian national team.
FC Bayern Munich has received the next rejection of a preferred candidate in its search for a coach. Ralf Rangnick will remain national coach in Austria beyond the European Championships this summer, the Austrian Football Association (ÖFB) announced. On Tuesday evening after the Champions League game against Real Madrid (2:2), the record champions’ bosses sounded optimistic and indicated that Rangnick would make a decision.
The 65-year-old was recently considered the clear favorite to succeed Thomas Tuchel: after the rejections of Xabi Alonso and Julian Nagelsmann, he was promoted to the record champions’ dream solution. “I am the Austrian team leader with all my heart. This task gives me incredible joy and I am determined to successfully continue on our chosen path,” said Rangnick in a statement from the association.
But he wanted to “expressly emphasize that this is not a rejection of FC Bayern, but a decision for my team and our common goals. Our full concentration is on the European Championship. We will do everything we can to get as far as possible there!”
