An American has gone viral on TikTok after posting a video in which he tries to charge his Tesla in polar conditions as the United States was hit by extreme weather.
Based in the state of Virginia, Domenick Nati is a radio host who owns a Tesla Model S. He wanted to recharge it on December 24, Christmas Eve, but not everything went as planned.
Blocked on Christmas Day
Indeed, much of the United States has been affected by a ” cyclone bomb “, causing temperatures to fall into the extremes. This Friday, December 23, when it was around -7 ° C outside Domenick Nati, he tried to recharge his Model S from home. It only had 19 miles (about 30 kilometers) of batteries left.
The vehicle told him that the battery needed to warm up before it could be charged, so he left his car on for a while, but was unable to achieve his goal. The next day, he decided to go to a Tesla Supercharger charging station, but unfortunately faced the same problem.
When he started to charge the Model S, the latter indicated that the battery was warming up and that it was necessary to wait for the recharge to begin. However, this message was displayed for several hours without the vehicle battery filling up. Result: the man found himself stranded on Christmas Eve. His video generated nearly 44,000 likes and 12,000 comments.
A problem with the vehicle, not all Teslas
You might think, through this publication, that all Tesla vehicles no longer charge when it’s too cold, but it seems that the problem comes directly from Domenick Nati’s car. As the specialized site explains Electrek :
It takes time for the battery pack to warm up enough to accept higher charge rates. That’s why Tesla has integrated a function that allows it to prepare for charging in advance if you enter a charging point in the navigation system. So, yes, there are issues with charging in cold weather, but that’s not the case here. This is a malfunction of this gentleman’s specific vehicle.
Moreover, a youtuber subjected his Tesla Model 3 to very low temperatures and then recharged it to see if everything was working optimally. Although he had to wait for the vehicle to warm up, the battery then charged normally. Low temperatures affect the charging of all electric vehicles, which must warm up before starting the process.
