He thinks he invests €90,000 in cryptocurrency and loses his life savings

A resident of Pajay in Isère reported the mishap he suffered when he invested in cryptocurrencies. His story is edifying and should serve as a warning to all Internet users. If the cryptocurrency market offers a thousand opportunities to budding investors, it offers even more to cybercriminals and scammers of all stripes.

Jean-Marc, that’s his first name, is a retiree from Isère just in his seventies. He has a small nest egg that he would like to invest in a financial product offering a good return. His goal is to grow this money as quickly as possible in order to bequeath it to his wife, who is much younger than him. Undoubtedly informed of the small fortune that Jean-Marc has, agents ofa fictitious brokerage and investment company solicited him by email last year. They offer him to invest his money in a popular and very high-yielding product: cryptocurrencies, the Amazon Coin, more precisely.

Cryptocurrency scams target new investors, you have to bait them gently. The scammers initially offer him an investment with a monthly return of 2%. Nothing suspicious so far. Jean-Marc makes a first payment. Cybercriminals being well organized, they create a fake wallet whose balance the victim can check. Dividends abound, and his kitty is growing visibly. He can’t touch it yet though.

With Jean-Marc now confident, scammers can raise the stakes. Ever more attractive investment offers are constantly being offered to it, culminating in a return of 26% per week. The Pajaytois still does not suspect anything, especially since he sees it through his online portfolio: his investment pays off, and a lot! He is on his way to becoming a millionaire. When he is asked to pay management fees and various taxes, he pays without hesitation.

Alas, by the time he wants to take advantage of his earnings, his savings are already far away. His virtual wallet was completely fictitious. He was indeed robbed of his savings, gently and of his own free will. We are certainly far from the 580 million € stolen from the Binance exchange platform, but the damage of our man still amounts to around 90,000 €. and he has only a remote hope of ever getting his money back.
