The president of MoDem François Bayrou was the guest of La Grande interview Europe 1-CNews. At the microphone of Laurence Ferrari, the mayor of Pau returned to Marine Le Pen’s declarations on the title of head of the armed forces given to the president. A statement that he considers “extremely serious”.
Cohabitation with Emmanuel Macron in the event of an absolute majority of the National Rally could prove more difficult than imagined. While Marine Le Pen’s party is more than confident of its victory in the legislative elections, the latest statements by the leader of the RN deputies do not go unnoticed.
“We have a safeguard: the Constitution”
In an interview given to the regional daily The Telegram, the former candidate for the presidential election believes that the title of chief of the armed forces given to the President of the Republic “is an honorary title”. “Extremely serious” remarks for François Bayrou.
“When there are divisions or fractures in a country, clashes, brutality… We have a safeguard. And this safeguard is the Constitution of the Fifth Republic,” explains the mayor of Pau to Laurence Ferrari. “It was General de Gaulle who wrote it precisely to escape these divisions,” he continues.
A challenge to order?
“But, if you claim that it is not true, in fact, that these are titles for show, then you are deeply calling into question the Constitution,” he is alarmed. In her interview, Marine Le Pen believes above all that “it is the Prime Minister who holds the purse strings”. Before adding “Jordan Bardella has no intention of picking quarrels with him, but he has set red lines. On Ukraine, the president will not be able to send troops.”
Enough to annoy François Bayrou on the set of La Grande interview: “If you call into question the very text of the Constitution, then you call into question the order in the country, the way we live together. (.. .) I find this statement to be extremely serious,” he concludes.
