The journey south requires further patience early on Saturday morning. The cars are piled up for over sixteen kilometers in front of the Gotthard north portal between Beckenried and Göschenen/UR, as the Touring Club Switzerland TCS reports on the online platform X.

Due to an accident in the tunnel, a three-kilometer-long column also formed between Quinto and Airolo on Friday evening. The waiting time there was up to 30 minutes, the TCS announced on X. The traffic jam was now six kilometers long.

The Gotthard road tunnel was closed for around two hours after 1 p.m. due to the accident. A total of three car occupants were seriously injured in the accident.

Because of all the snow, the Gotthard pass road as an alternative to the Gotthard road tunnel cannot be opened to traffic on Pentecost, unlike other years.

The Göschenen and Wassen motorway entrances were closed so that drivers could not avoid the traffic jam.

Last Ascension weekend, the journey to the south and back had already become a tough test of patience. Columns of up to 16 kilometers long formed in front of both tunnel portals over the long weekend.
