JBL has unveiled the Soundgear Sense, its first air-conduction wireless headphones for staying aware of your surroundings.
On the occasion of the IFA in Berlin, JBL unveiled its new range of audio products. In addition to new living room speakers or Bluetooth headsets, the American manufacturer took advantage of the event to unveil its JBL Soundgear Sense. These are actually the brand’s first air conduction headphones.
Air conduction headphones, quezaco? In fact, all headphones theoretically resume a conduction of the sound signal, with the exception of models with bone conduction. Nevertheless, the air conduction is even more pronounced when the transducers, i.e. the loudspeakers of the headphones, are positioned particularly far from the eardrums. This is the case for example on the OpenFit headphones from Shokz.
Large transducers for better bass rendering
It is precisely this system that JBL is now adopting with its new Soundgear Sense. We are in fact dealing here with headphones equipped with transducers 16.2 mm in diameter – compared to 6 to 11 mm for conventional transducers – whose large format is supposed to compensate for the longer distance between the listener and the ear. . To ensure responsive bass, JBL also claims to have developed a low-frequency enhancement algorithm. The headphones also benefit from a technology called ” OpenSound aiming to direct the sound towards the auditory canal.
The main use of these earphones is above all sport and the security aspect. Since they do not block the ear canal, they allow the user to remain aware of their surroundings. As such, the JBL Soundgear Sense are IP54 certified for resistance to sweat, rain and splashes. In addition, if the headphones are above all completely wireless models, they can be connected to each other by an optional neck strap, included in the box. Other features include Bluetooth 5.3 compatibility with planned support for Bluetooth LE Audio via update, or 6 hours of battery life with the headphones alone – 24 hours in total with the charging case.
The JBL Soundgear Sense headphones will be available on August 31 in white or black at a price of 149.99 euros in France.
