After a cabinet meeting, the Slovakian Prime Minister Fico is shot down by a man with several bullets. The doctors classify the politician’s condition as serious. Now doctors are carrying out another procedure.
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has undergone another operation and remains in serious condition, according to his doctors. The director of the FD Roosevelt University Hospital in Banska Bystrica, Miriam Lapunikova, said the head of government is currently stable and awake. He is in the intensive care unit and his condition is very serious. The 59-year-old was attacked with a firearm on Wednesday. He was hit by several bullets.
Lapunikova said the recent operation removed Fico’s dead tissue that remained in his body. “I think it will be a few days before we know definitively what direction the further development is going,” Defense Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Robert Kalinak told reporters at the clinic. He emphasized that the government is continuing its work. “The state is stable and today the patient is also stable.”
Fico was attacked while greeting supporters after a government meeting in the former coal mining town of Handlová. A suspect was arrested. He was accompanied by police to his home in the town of Levice today. Media reported this was part of a search for evidence.
The Markiza TV channel reported that police confiscated a computer and documents.
Prosecutors have ordered police not to release the suspect’s identity or other details of the case. Unconfirmed media reports said he was a 71-year-old pensioner who was known as an amateur poet and may have previously worked as a security guard at a shopping center in the southwest of the country. Government authorities said on Thursday that the suspect did not belong to any political group. But the attack was politically motivated.
