Emmanuel Macron denounced Monday the “intolerable” and “unacceptable” aggression of deputy Stéphane Claireaux (presidential majority) of Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, targeted Sunday by projectiles in front of his home by demonstrators against the health pass. “We have seen the intensification of violence” against elected officials, lamented the French president in front of elected officials and associations during a trip to Nice (south), the president’s first since he said last week to want “piss off” the unvaccinated.
Stéphane Claireaux announced Monday his intention to file a complaint after this attack which according to him “resembled a stoning”. The assault he suffered took place a few days before the establishment, Wednesday, of the health pass in Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, a community of some 5,900 inhabitants located off the eastern coast of Canada. The boss of the LREM group (presidential majority) in the National Assembly and former Minister of the Interior, Christophe Castane r, said he had counted in 2021 “322 threats against deputies, two thirds of which against deputies of my group” .
The increase in attacks and threats
Faced with the proliferation of attacks and threats, the President of the National Assembly Richard Ferrand will meet on Tuesday evening the French Ministers of the Interior and of Justice, Gérald Darmanin and Eric Dupond-Moretti, to take stock of the number of cases identified, on the investigations carried out and on the judicial response that has been provided, if necessary.
Mr. Ferrand had announced the organization of such a meeting during the truce of the confectioners after the fire of the personal garage of another deputy of the presidential majority, Pascal Bois, which had aroused strong emotion in the political class, on background of clear upsurge in violence against deputies mainly because of their support for the government’s health policy.
Mr. Darmanin had announced in the wake of strengthening the protection of homes and offices of deputies.
