Interns in general medicine, so far trained in three years, will in future have to spend an additional year “in a medical office”, which can be paid “up to 4,500 euros net per month”, François Braun announced on Monday. .
Emmanuel Macron’s campaign promise, voted in the last Social Security budget, this measure will concern future general practitioners who will start their internship in September and therefore their fourth year in the fall of 2026.
The Minister of Health had commissioned a report in September to specify the terms, in particular on the amount of remuneration. A document was finally handed over Monday, a week away from the “national ranking tests” which will determine the choices (specialty and city) of future interns.
This additional year will not be “just another year”, assured Mr. Braun in a speech delivered on this occasion. It will include “two six-month internships” carried out (with some exceptions) “in the same medical office”, with compulsory participation in “permanence of care” in the evening and on weekends.
In return, the interns will benefit from the status of “junior doctor”, accompanied by a remuneration of 32,000 euros gross per year. They will also keep 20% of the fees for their consultations – within a range of 10 to 30 acts per day.
Those who choose to practice in a medical desert “will receive additional compensation”, added Mr. Braun, recalling that this reform aims both to “strengthen the specialty of general medicine” and “access to health in the territories”.
In total, general practitioners in the last year of internship will be able to pocket “up to 4,500 euros net per month”.
“Normally, the vast majority” of interns in general medicine practicing in a medical desert will achieve this remuneration of 4,500 euros net per month, it was indicated in the entourage of the minister.
“It is a very incentive remuneration” compared to other medical specialties, the same source added.
In total, the system should concern 3,600 interns per year.
On condition, however, of finding internship supervisors to welcome them: the minister has therefore set a target of 16,000 practitioners trained at the end of 2026, against 13,000 currently, in order to be “up to the need”.
According to the minister’s entourage, it should not be too difficult to convince potential internship supervisors, because the fourth-year intern is “a way to better respond to the demand for care” from their patients, and also from ” prepare their succession”.
