Healthcare – Study: Health insurance premiums will rise sharply in 2023 – News

  • According to a new study by the consulting firm Accenture, health insurance premiums for 2023 could increase by up to almost 10 percent in some cantons.
  • On average, the need to catch up to cover the development of expenditure is at least 5.4 percent.

That writes the NZZ on Sunday in the current issue. The study published on Accenture’s website states that there is a corresponding need to catch up if the premiums are to take into account the actual cost increases in the healthcare sector.

According to the study, one reason for the need to catch up is that in the last two years, due to political pressure, the premiums have been calculated more tightly and reserves have been partially reduced. This is to curb premium growth. But the corona pandemic and various special effects have also contributed to the current situation.

The biggest jump is imminent in Ticino

The premiums in 2023 are likely to increase most in the canton of Ticino. Because healthcare costs there rose by 9 percent in 2021, but premiums fell by 0.2 percent in 2022, Accenture expects premiums to increase by at least 9.2 percent in 2023.

However, these figures do not even include the cost increase from 2022. According to Accenture, the figures from the first few months of 2022 indicate a continuing increase in healthcare costs: Significantly greater premium increases must therefore be expected in 2023,

In the cantons of Neuchâtel (+7.8 percent) and Graubünden (+8.1 percent) there is also a threat of hefty premium increases to offset the cost increase from 2021. The cantons of Glarus (+1 percent), Jura (+1.4 percent) and Nidwalden (+2.6 percent) should get off relatively lightly.
