There were local strong thunderstorms, lightning strikes and heavy precipitation during the night from Sunday to Monday and on Monday morning. This with mostly muggy temperatures. According to Meteo News, the “Finja” low, which moves from southern France across Switzerland, led to more than 4,500 lightning bolts being recorded by 3 p.m. on Monday.

After the weather situation calmed down for a short time on Monday afternoon, there should be widespread intense thunderstorms with hail, strong gusts of wind and mostly lots of rain towards Monday evening, during the night and on Tuesday. Temperatures are also likely to drop by at least 10 degrees in most places.

Weather services are therefore warning of the strong thunderstorms on Monday. Between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., the meteorologists expect large amounts of precipitation, for example in Winterthur, where there was heavy precipitation again on Monday afternoon, or in the Lake Constance region, where it hailed heavily later in the afternoon. This also had an impact on public transport. The SBB reported restrictions on several routes, for example in the canton of Zurich on the S 15 line between Oberglatt (ZH) and Niederweningen, where all connections were canceled due to storm damage.

The Federal Office for Meteorology (MeteoSwiss) has issued danger level 3 (considerable danger) for most of the Swiss cantons. At danger level 3 hail damage and falling trees are possible. Traffic can also be obstructed, and underground car parks and underpasses can be flooded. Wind, hail and lightning strikes could be dangerous for people who walk and stay outside or in forests.

Not only Monday, but also Tuesday will be uncomfortable with the weather. According to forecasts, Tuesday should start almost everywhere with an overcast sky, and showers are likely to be possible in the Mittelland. Thunderstorms will occur throughout the day in Ticino and eastern Switzerland. A maximum of 14 degrees is then reached there, while Zurich and Bern reach a maximum of 17 degrees.

On Wednesday it will probably remain dry throughout Switzerland. Only in Ticino could precipitation still occur locally. After that, temperatures are expected to rise again almost everywhere.
