Ary Borges outshines even Alex Popp

Clear victory with a spectacle: Brazil partially conjures up Panama to the ground and scores the most beautiful goal so far at the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. 23-year-old Ary Borges stands out, scoring three goals, one more than Alexandra Popp at the start. Superstar Marta shows up only briefly.

Led by an outstanding Ary Borges, the Brazilian soccer players started their title mission at the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand with a clear victory. The co-favourites won their first group game against World Cup debutants Panama in Adelaide/Australia comfortably 4-0 (2-0). The technique and the pace made the class difference particularly clear, so that even Panama’s defensive system could hardly create stability.

A hat-trick by Borges (19′, 39′, 70′) and a goal by Bia Zaneratto (48′) sealed victory for the Brazilians, where superstar Marta only came on as a substitute in the closing stages. The 37-year-old is taking part in a World Cup finals in Australia and New Zealand for the sixth and last time. The title is the declared goal when the six-time world footballer bids farewell.

Goal of the tournament to 3:0

Against the world number 52. As expected, Panama outperformed Brazil from the start. The South Americans dominated the game at will and only had to blame themselves for the partly negligent exploitation of chances. The 3-0 was the most beautiful goal of the tournament so far: The Brazilians combined through the Panama penalty area for five stops, playing the ball once with the heel and once with the sole – before Bia Zaneratto completed the triangle brilliantly.

Coach Pia Sundhage’s team showed that they are a force to be reckoned with in the tournament, winning their first game in their ninth World Cup participation (goal difference: 27:1) and now occupying first place in Group F. Next Saturday (12:00 noon CEST) Brazil will meet fellow favorites France in the second group game. Should the DFB-Elf take first place in their own group at the end of the group stage, they will meet the runners-up from Group F in the round of 16.
