Heidi + Leni Klum in an interview: “Proud, next to her old mother”

Always one heart and one soul? Are you kidding me? Are you serious when you say that! Heidi and Leni Klum are similar in many things – but not in all. What Leni thinks of mom’s wardrobe? The two revealed this to GALA, among other things, in an interview at the start of their fourth campaign with Intimissimi.

Lots of energy, an exuberant mood and always a smile on their faces: Heidi Klum, 50, and Leni Klum, 19, are known as a real power duo. This is also reflected in their fourth joint campaign with the Italian lingerie brand Intimissimi and the accompanying interview with GALA. We meet mother and daughter for a conversation in Berlin over Italian arias and coffee and it quickly becomes clear: when it comes to fashion taste, the otherwise harmonious duo are surprisingly at odds. What things daughter Klum would still steal from her mom’s closet and what secret lies behind Heidi’s career that has spanned more than 30 years – the two reveal this to GALA in a very private interview.

Heidi and Leni Klum in an interview about fashion taste and the secret of their career success

GALA: You two are a real successful duo, as this is your fourth “Intimissimi” campaign together. What do you think about it?
Heidi: I am very proud to be the face of the campaign with my daughter. It shows me how confident I was in raising my child. She is proud to be next to her old mother in hers Lingerie to stand (laughs). And I can spend time with my daughter, which doesn’t happen that often anymore.

Was anything different about this shoot?
Leni: Of course the pieces. The chemistry between the two of us is always similar. We have a lot of fun shooting and making videos. This time we danced and sang again. That was great.

In addition to bras, the brand is also known for pajamas, which are increasingly being worn on the street. Is this also an option for you?
Heidi: There are some pretty black pajamas with feathers. I recently wore it on the street and took it with me heels and a nice bra underneath. If you leave the buttons open a little and tie the top loosely, I find it very chic.

Is there an outfit that you regret afterwards?
Heidi: I’m sure some people didn’t like one or two outfits. But when I look back, I always think: I looked fabulous.

Leni, you are now an experienced one Model. Do you also get recognized on the street?
Leni: In new YorkWhere I live, I’m rarely recognized if I’m honest.

Heidi: Yes, that’s right, if you are spoken to and recognized, that actually only happens in Germany.

Leni, do you think it’s good not to be recognized?
Yes, I mean, ultimately I don’t care. But I do enjoy the fact that since I’ve lived in New York, there’s never been a moment where I’ve been approached.

Do you ever share clothes with each other? (Both shake their heads violently and start laughing)
Heidi: No, we don’t have similar fashion tastes at all. I love it loud and flashy.

Leni: And I like muted colors. Lots of black, gray and white. My mother and I couldn’t be more opposite in this regard. But her accessoriesI like that one, I would steal it from her.

GALA: What accessories are these?
Leni: Especially bags, my mother has good taste in them.

Heidi: Yes, you took my old bag. One from Michael Kors (points to Leni).

Leni: That’s right, I stole that from you. And already some glasses.

Heidi: I especially see my retro things disappearing here and there.

Your closet must be huge – do you need to clean it out regularly?
Heidi: I should, but I don’t. Instead, my wardrobe is spread all over the house. At first it was just my wardrobe, now there are clothes in Johan’s old room too.

Leni: (Gets in) And in the basement.

Heidi: I find it difficult to clear things out. I love holding on to the memories. At first I thought I was doing this for my children, but actually I keep it all for myself.

What is your relationship with your wardrobe, Leni?
Leni: I love my closet! But it’s pretty empty. It only contains things that I actually wear and that are comfortable.

Heidi: Leni cleans out often, even weekly.

Leni: No, not that often. But I often just throw some items of clothing somewhere else and then they end up lying there and no longer in the closet. I also like to wear a lot of the things I like very often.

Heidi, you have been working as a model for over 30 years. What is the secret of your success?
Heidi: I am very lucky that after so many years I can still work in the job I love. But the industry has also changed a lot, it has become more diverse. I mean, I’m 50 now and still doing lingerie campaigns, that’s great, right?

If you had to wear one outfit forever, what would it be?
Leni: A gray jogging suit because it’s so comfortable.

Heidi: For me a mini skirt, probably in rainbow colors or zebra print. And high heels.

What do you like to experiment with?
Leni: Beautiful make-up.

Heidi: outfits. I love mixing things up. I recently wore leopard boots and a leopard mini skirt with a vintage Moschino blouse. Others may have asked themselves, “Did she get dressed in the dark?” But I love the harmonization of all these things.
