Heinz Rudolf Kunze: The situation in America "can only get better"

Heinz Rudolf Kunze is excited about the US election. In an interview, he reveals how he thinks about the future US President Joe Biden.

Heinz Rudolf Kunze (63, "Der Truth die Ehre") spent the Corona summer 2020 recording a new album: "As the name suggests – Solo live", a double album with 35 songs and lyrics, will be released on Friday ( November 13th). As one of the most important political songwriters in Germany, the situation in the USA does not leave him indifferent. In an interview with the news agency spot on news, he reveals the topics that concern him, how he is doing in the corona crisis and what future he predicts for the USA under the future US President Joe Biden (77).

What can your fans particularly look forward to with the new album?

Heinz Rudolf Kunze: To what I think is a pretty unique performance, because it is a mixture of musical and literary performance. The album was recorded in the summer of 2020, during Corona time, and I was one of the few artists allowed to perform.

A lot has changed in the world since then. How do you look back on summer 2020?

Kunze: With a mixture of gratitude for the few performances that you were allowed to do solo under difficult circumstances, and sadness about the many other performances that were canceled. We weren't even able to save ten percent of what we planned to do this year, and that was a lot.

How is it for you to sing for yourself without a band?

Kunze: Yes, that's great, all the applause just for me. (laughs)

Your lyrics are often political. Which topics are important to you yourself?

Kunze: I am concerned with the issues that concern us all when we go through our life with a reasonably alert mind. Both German politics and world politics, I'm a completely normal person and have no different preferences than any thoughtful contemporary. And of course you should see it as a person in public life, but also as every other citizen of this country, as your task to stand up for certain things.

You are known for your countless concerts and are usually constantly on the move. How do you feel about not being able to appear due to the corona pandemic?

Kunze: I actually live very withdrawn anyway. I am a person who really appreciates being a hermit. I like to be at home, read a lot, listen to a lot of music and write a lot. In this respect, less has changed in my private life than perhaps in some others. But of course it's less fun when you have to and are not allowed to. When this is imposed on us in such a way that we are not allowed out, not allowed to meet other people and that we are not allowed to play concerts. Then you are deprived of a huge amount of freedom of movement and then things are no longer so much fun that you would otherwise like to do.

In your podcast "Asked by your glasses" you keep inviting well-known guests. Who did you have the most interesting conversation with so far?

Kunze: That's difficult to say. The people were so different that everyone contributed something very special. I try to make all of the people I talk to look good. I don't want to beat them up, I don't want to make them look ridiculous or confrontationally journalistic, I want them to voluntarily tell as much as possible about their lives. And that has worked out well for everyone so far.

You will soon be celebrating your 40th stage anniversary. How do you look back on your career?

Kunze: (smiles) stunned. I just can't imagine it's been that long.

How do you assess the last four years under Donald Trump?

Kunze: Donald Trump is the enemy of democracy, the enemy of humanity and the enemy of the American idea and has tried everything to destroy his country.

What do you think of Donald Trump's refusal to recognize Biden's election victory?

Kunze: It fits the psyche of a three year old.

How do you think the US will continue under Joe Biden?

Kunze: I am a practiced and proven pessimist. I don't expect too much, it just can't get any worse than under Trump. So it can only get better. However, I don't know if Joe Biden can do a good job amid this controversy and will be able to heal the rift that runs through America. After all, an extremely large number of people voted for Trump, one mustn't forget that. America will be preoccupied with itself in the long run and will probably not be very reliable in global politics.
