Helicopter missions – injured ski tourers had to be rescued

Alpine emergencies and a serious injury demanded alpine police and mountain rescue in Upper Styria on Saturday. Two rescue helicopters and one police helicopter were also deployed.

A group of four ski tourers, two men (69, 70) and two women (58, 61) from Lower Austria was around 12.40 p.m. in the “Rotkogel” area in Johnsbach. On the descent in the “Rotkogelrinne” the group went too far to the left into steep, rocky terrain. The two women dared not continue their journey and made an emergency call. The two men continued their descent. The 70-year-old from the Amstetten district fell and rolled over several times. The man was first aided by his companion. Helicopter in action The police helicopter brought the women in distress to safety by rescuing them from dew. The injured 70-year-old was rescued by the C99 rescue helicopter and flown to the LKH Amstetten. Around 40 members of the Admont and Trieben mountain rescue centers and the Liezen alpine police were on duty. Simultaneous accident A 41-year-old ski tourer from Vienna was injured on the “Leobner” at the same time. When she reached the summit, she twisted her right knee while removing the climbing skin.
