Helldivers 2 will never have this game mode despite being requested by fans

Helldivers 2 has just dashed all fans’ hopes. The game draws a definitive line on this game mode, which is nevertheless highly requested by certain players.

One of the biggest successes of the year for Sony, Helldivers 2 has surpassed all expectations. If we knew that the Starship Troopers formula would work, no one expected such success. A real hit on PS5 and PC, the game climbed into the top of the best sellers and most played games on Steam in less time than it takes to say democracy.

No, Helldivers 2 doesn’t have time to create a story, it has a war to win

However, on paper, Helldivers 2 is what everyone seems to hate: a service game. Mandatory Internet connection, cosmetics shop, experience farm galore… Helldivers 2 is a pure-blooded service game and it’s a huge success. Proof that it works like crazy. However, even if they are much fewer in number than one might have believed, many players have indicated that they would like to have some content to do solo, far from the almost obligatory cooperation. A story to follow, narrative cutscenes, a complete campaign for solitary pleasure. Others want the arrival of a story mode, quite simply, even if it is playable in cooperation.
It was by responding to one of them that Shams Jojani, the big boss of the Arrowhead studio, literally dashed all hopes.

When a fan asked him if they couldn’t create a story mode playable in cooperation, the head of the studio bluntly replied that that “will never happen” because that would require “recreate almost an entire game”. And that is not on the agenda.

No time to daydream, we must save Super Earth

Helldivers 2 is and will therefore forever remain a service game, but a well-designed service game even if everything is not always rosy when we talk about balancing in particular. The game also had its share of problems, including some questionable decisions on Sony’s part. But despite that, it continues on its merry way, still a hit on PS5 and PC and adds content regularly.

The story mode and/or the single player mode will perhaps be for the next part, who knows. Moreover, when another fan mentions the future of the franchise and the single-player mode, Shams Jojani responds with a little “fingers crossed” emoji. So there is hope, you never know.
