Hello Netzwelt: Here comes the best news of the week

TECHNOLOGY

Hello network world! It doesn’t matter whether it’s WhatsApp, Netflix, Google or mobile phone bills: This week there is important information for everyone who lives in any way.

It doesn’t matter whether it’s WhatsApp, Netflix, Google or mobile phone bills: This week there is important information for everyone who lives in any way. That’s what Michael does too, who with his well-fitting hairdo (haha) is just about to set foot in an autonomous air taxi and is supposed to dutifully say hello on behalf of the rest of the editorial team. Greetings! Here are your top stories of the week.

You see the article form of our weekly newsletter “Hallo Netzwelt”. If you don’t want to miss an issue from now on, just subscribe to it! Click on the button at the very end of this article.

Dear network world, it’s not always all sunshine and roses. So let’s start with some bad news for once, then we’re done with it. The first thing you should do is to urgently check your mobile phone bill if you have already received it.

  1. Because of Dark Herring: Check your mobile phone bill!

  2. Germany’s oldest smart TV …

  3. Autonomous air taxis are becoming a reality

  4. Those were other top stories of the week

  5. And then a magician develops a beer app

  6. The flat joke of the week is presented by beer – because it’s very good!

  7. A lot of effort goes into this. We look forward to a recommendation!

Because of Dark Herring: Check your mobile phone bill!

I don’t know about you, but I haven’t looked at it in a long time. I should have, because there is a sad reason. Researchers have identified 470 Android apps on Google Play that have lured well over 100 million unsuspecting users into a subscription trap since March 2020.

Many Android apps contain malicious code. This can cost you dearly.

So 100 million Android users in the world could have lost money unnoticed. How many Android users are there anyway? Competitor Apple announced this week that there are more than 1.8 billion active Apple devices out there. I have to let the number sink in first. The iPhone accounts for the lion’s share at more than a billion.

Yes, yes, the world is dirty and mean. If only you could wipe everything off the table with a few words, like this new Google Assistant command. If only everything were as easy as reporting Tinder dates that get too close to you (virtually).

Instead, we should all (!) check immediately whether we have the right WhatsApp settings, the right levers. Or whether we didn’t make the classic mistakes when setting it up, God knows how long ago that was, which cybercriminals are now simply exploiting.

We summarize for you in the monthly report what will be important and what will change in February 2022. And then it’s on to something more uplifting.

Germany’s oldest smart TV …

… is not in the technology museum in Sinsheim. Amazon took a 40-year-old tube from storage and dusted it off. Thanks to a special adapter and a Fire TV Stick, the telly now also shows Netflix films. Be sure to check it out.

I always find projects like this very exciting. Darius dug up something similar this week. GTA 5 on Game Boy! Here is the video that amazes the gaming world. What is Switzerland actually doing? Chase away pigeons with drones. Did I say we live in exciting times? Speaking of…

Autonomous air taxis are becoming a reality

When I think of “future”, there are always cars flying around. It’s been like this for as long as I can remember. And I’m not the only one with that, it’s the same in thousands of science fiction films. And who likes to model themselves on science fiction films? Right, Dings, the reality!

This week, none other than Boeing (read: Bohhinng, not Beung) bought Wisk Aero for a huge sum (read: $450 million). The company was launched by Larry Page (who already founded Google) and I (cling again, like a monkey) believe: Slowly something with the flying cars will happen.

Wisk Aero: The sixth generation of the Cora can fly at speeds of up to 160 km/h.

Because Wisk Aero is about to launch a fleet of 30 electrically powered, vertical take-off and landing air taxis. Things should fly autonomously. You get in, choose your destination and wuuuuuuiiiiii, you take off. Here is a video.

With the strategic partner Boeing and the necessary wherewithal, Wisk Aero believes that it will be able to clear the FAA’s approval hurdle and get the green light for regular operations. Insanely exciting, don’t you think?

At this point, a big thank you to everyone who drew my attention to an embarrassing spelling mistake in the newsletter version of this article. There was consistent talk of “Boing”.

Those were other top stories of the week

And then a magician develops a beer app

Do you remember that silly iBeer app on iPhone? Exactly – it looked like real beer was sloshing back and forth behind the display. The developer, actually a magician, probably had the idea of his life with it. At times, the app earned him $20,000 – a day! The app stayed at #1 on the App Store charts for a year straight.

Fast computers have long understood that a pretty sum must have come together. Luckily the developer didn’t invest it in real beer like we and probably any other sane person would have done. No, the 52-year-old put it into real estate and furniture and now lives happily ever after in Spain. On a farm. Nice story, you can read it here.

The flat joke of the week is presented by beer – because it’s very good!

The subheading should not be a call to drink alcohol. There is also non-alcoholic beer. Rather, we should feel inspired by the iBeer magician and not immediately push every silly idea to the sidelines. Convert them! You’re welcome! Otherwise we can wait a long time for flying cars and other apps that are an icebreaker at parties. In this sense: always stay open to new things, tasty, top- or bottom-fermented, hairy in the right or wrong places and just what you already are anyway – the best newsletter readers in the world. Cheers, see you next Friday!

“And at the end of the day a cyclist!
(Thomas, 35, turns without looking over his shoulder)

There are even more flat jokes at this point on Netzwelt.

A lot of effort goes into this. We look forward to a recommendation!
