Hello Netzwelt: Here comes the slightly different annual review

IN OUR OWN THING

What do the iPhone 14, the big GTA 6 leak and foldable laptops have in common? They all do not appear in our “Best of 2022”. Here comes the year in review of a different kind.

Whether by Dieter Nuhr, Spotify (Wrapped) or, more recently, Steam (Replay) – the web and television are full of annual reviews. A lot of what we see there doesn’t always bring back fond memories.

Because even if the corona pandemic is drawing to a close, the year 2022 was marked by uncertainty and fear due to the war in Eastern Europe. And as a technology magazine, we couldn’t avoid reporting on topics such as blackouts or energy-saving measures.

In 2023 everything will be better again – hopefully! In order to send you into the new year in a positive mood, we have put together entertaining stories from the last twelve months.

Good resolutions for the new year can also be derived from one or the other. Others are just plain funny, interesting, or whimsical. Have fun while reading!

Become a millionaire thanks to the beer app

“There’s an app for that” – is an ancient advertising slogan for Apple’s iPhone and in fact there is now an app for everything in the App Store. A very bizarre one is the iBeer app, which uses an animation to make it look like you’re drinking beer from your iPhone. So far, so pointless – one might think. In fact, this app has made developer Steve Sheraton filthy rich.

He earned up to $20,000 a day in weddings, as he revealed in an interview in January. You see, you don’t have to develop electric cars or research a corona vaccine to get rich. Sometimes a fun app will do the trick. So the first resolution for 2023 is: Implement your (app) ideas, no matter how stupid they may be at times!

What does a smartwatch do for truckers?

Speaking of good intentions. Doing more sport is certainly at the top of many people’s list. Garmin has been offering numerous smartwatches as little helpers for years. In February 2022, however, the manufacturer expanded the portfolio with a special model for truckers. What special features does a trucker smartwatch offer, we naturally asked ourselves in the editorial office.

Can the truck be controlled remotely with this? Is there a special fitness mode that recognizes how often you have waved at other road users from the truck? no The “Instinct 2 – dēzl Edition Trucker” offers a special 20-minute workout for driving breaks that, according to the manufacturer, can be easily integrated into the daily routine. So you see excuses like “I just don’t have time for sports” are no longer valid in the new year!

Here comes E Capricorn

In March, another crazy gadget caught our attention: the Kawasaki E-Ibex. The rideable robot was presented at the International Robot Exhibition (iREX) in Tokyo and should in future be able to help with harvesting in agriculture, among other things.

We are excited to see what forms robots will take in 2023. At the top of our list is a robot in the shape of a paper clip, a kind of Karl bracket for real life. Stop! Stop! That was a joke Microsoft please don’t implement it. It’s enough that Karl Klammer is available as an ugly sweater – after all, you’re doing something good by buying this fashionable total failure.

Screws are also becoming smart

“Your screw is loose…”, in the future you can parry this saying with “According to my app, everything is okay”. Because the Fraunhofer Cluster of Excellence Cognitive Internet Technologies (CCIT) presented intelligent screws in May. These transmit their status by radio and report when they become loose.

They do not need a rechargeable battery for this, electricity is generated via temperature changes or light. However, these intelligent screw connections are initially only intended for industrial use. There they should facilitate maintenance and checks.

Windows 11 instead of house arrest

A father developed a creative method of punishment for his son rather than intelligent screws. Instead of house arrest or a reduction in pocket money, there was an update to Windows 11 for the son’s gaming PC.

When he wanted to be celebrated on Reddit for the campaign, it backfired badly. A detail in the evidence photo embarrassed him.

Now I’m running out of reconciliation, so keep it short and sweet…

More crazy stories from 2022

That happened this week…

The time between the years is clearly calmer. Nevertheless, there was still some news this week. We have summarized the most important articles as well as those you read the most below.

We’re going to cool the champagne in the editorial office and start a countdown on the iPhone so we don’t miss the new year. Have a good one, slide or ride your E-Ibex well in and hopefully we’ll read each other again in 2023. The flat joke of the week follows at the end.

The flat joke of the week

Where does New Year’s come before Christmas?
In the dictionary!

There are even more flat jokes at this point on Netzwelt.

A lot of effort goes into this. We look forward to a recommendation!
