Hello Netzwelt: We could slap ourselves – this is what our new office looks like right now

TECHNOLOGY

This week at Hallo Netzwelt: resounding slaps in the face, huge e-bikes, the best fitness trackers, the best news of the week and a first look at our new office.

Just get up and decide to give a slap in the face. Will Smith did it. He doesn’t deserve admiration for that. Secretly, I can understand him. I would also like to give one to some manufacturers, programmers or providers. But today we give ourselves a juicy slap in the face, because we overslept our own anniversary. Reaching out with his hand, Michael greets you warmly on behalf of the 25-year-old Netzwelt.

We’re all spread out in the home office. It should be scattered! Because no one was quite right on the note that the world of the internet will be 25 years old this year. We’ve been around for a quarter of a century! Yeah well, okay, down a gear. I tend to exaggerate.

The network world in its present form was brought to light in 2001 from digital nothingness. Before that there were various predecessors, the best known of which was called mp3-world.net in 1997. From 2001, these and other world.net pages were merged into today’s network world. We’ll save the celebrations anyway.

Inside Netzwelt: News from the construction site

Matching this there is news from the construction site. I have repeatedly indicated in previous newsletter issues that we will be relocating the editorial office within Hamburg. The office at the fish market has been cleared, our belongings are in interim storage. Looking into the empty halls has something melancholy about it for some of us. “No more fish sandwiches?” is high on the list of urgent questions.

But a look at the new premises makes the heart beat faster. Cables are currently being laid in the new “Netzwelt-Loft”. Technically, we are looking forward to a symmetrical fiber optic connection with incredibly high upload rates of 10,000 Mbit/s. The dedicated line to the Internet should save us and you annoying waiting times when you need information very quickly.

We bought what were probably the last big iMacs of the old generation (without the M1) in order to be able to work with both Windows and macOS. And now we’re waiting for the drywall to be completed, the carpets laid, the washrooms set up. And hopefully soon the lights will go out for good at the Fischmarkt, only to soon be shining brighter than ever in the city center. There are definitely fish sandwiches there too. No April fools.

By the way, today is the first of April. I refrain from trying to lead you onto virtual ice here for several reasons. This newsletter is known to be far too serious (cough, cough) for you to fall for my cheap tricks. If Hallo Netzwelt doesn’t reach you until tomorrow and you want to quickly get rid of a gag via WhatsApp – this way.

Cult figures in the background

Of course, I was pleased that in the wake of April 1st, our flat jokes collection was eagerly clicked and shared. We always knew: because behind the J there is a K…

Not an April Fool’s joke either: there are “cult figures in the background” who steal the show from the actual showrunners in well-known TV series and films. And that although they are never (entirely) visible on the screen. It’s crazy what ideas our series team sometimes comes up with. see for yourself

Keyword series: I’ve written it often, but I’ll say it again to be on the safe side – I hardly know my way around. Yesterday, on a long train ride from Amsterdam to Hamburg, I started Lost. That probably says everything about my cinematic education. But even I know people who freak out when I tell them there might be a Finding Nemo series soon. So. I’ll work through Lost first, then I’ll probably watch Finding Nemo. So the movie. Should be good. Soon it will also go back to Westeros. Don’t know if this information will help you…

Those were other top stories of the week

News from the e-bike world

When it comes to mobility, especially e-bikes, I can have my say. Real experts could have pricked up their ears at the keyword “Amsterdam” from above. There is not just a very well-known manufacturer that I was able to visit for Netzwelt. Amsterdam is known to be a true cycling Mecca.

Pedestrians and drivers simply have to submit to the flow of the many two-wheelers. About five years ago, before an appointment, I sat for hours on a park bench in an Amsterdam park and watched the hustle and bustle of the residents, I came home surprised and reported: hardly any e-bikes! The Dutch are still pedaling “for real”.

In the meantime, that has changed. A striking number of Super73 bikes, VanMoof S3 and many e-bikes that were remarkably easy to pedal and remarkably fast. Not surprisingly, three e-bike stories can be found in the top news of the week. A very big one, a very small one and one from Germany.

The flat joke of the week

Friends of the network world – we’re moving into the weekend. Come with us. Hope you didn’t fall for too many April Fool’s jokes today. Although – as is well known, a smile never hurt anyone. I’ll try it too – with this flat joke. Have a good one, we’ll read each other again next Friday at the latest.

Why do most dolphins live in salt water?
Because they would always have to sneeze in pepper water!

There are even more flat jokes at this point on Netzwelt.

A lot of effort goes into this. We look forward to a recommendation!
