Hemorrhoids: Home Remedies To Take At Home

What helps quickly against hemorrhoids? Hemorrhoids home remedies can be used to contain the symptoms. We'll tell you the best ways and means.

Causes and Hemorrhoids Home Remedies

Everyone has hemorrhoids (also: hemorrhoids). Namely the so-called hemorrhoidal mesh near the anus: this ring-shaped tissue cushion with good blood circulation has the task of securely sealing the rectum from the outside. A hemorrhoid problem occurs when the cushions are abnormally enlarged. This happens when pressure is applied to the blood vessels for a long time, the blood can no longer drain, the veins dilate and the connective tissue, so to speak, wears out. Excessive pressing or re-pressing during bowel movements is considered to be the cause of enlarged tissue cushions. This can be especially the case with (chronic) constipation.

Hemorrhoids: Symptoms at a Glance

How do I know if I have hemorrhoids? The following symptoms suggest this:

  • Wetness in the anal area
  • Urgent urgency despite bowel movements
  • Sensation of pressure Relubricating stool
  • Traces of bright red blood when defecating
  • Burning pain and itching around the anus

Hemorrhoids: Home Remedies To Take At Home

The best home remedies for hemorrhoids can relieve the discomfort. These tips help in a gentle way against the symptoms and make bowel movements easier again:

1. Eat high in fiber

Eating a high-fiber diet will soften your stool and help prevent constipation. Suitable foods include:

  • whole grain products
  • linseed
  • Flea seeds
  • vegetables and fruit

Olive or linseed oil also promotes digestion. To do this, take a tablespoon of it after the meal.

2. Fluid intake

The intestines can only function properly with sufficient fluids. Drinking a lot is important, especially with a high-fiber diet. As a result, the swelling substances in the intestine can swell well and thus act at all. Otherwise, there is also a high risk of constipation.

3. Lots of exercise

Movement supports the intestines, because the slight muscle movements move the intestinal contents further. Without exercise, the bowel becomes sluggish and there is a risk of constipation.

4. Pillows

A hemorrhoid pillow makes sense for pain. This inflatable ring does not put any strain on the affected area when sitting.

5. Sitz bath

A hip bath offers soothing relief, especially for weeping hemorrhoids and itching. These are hip baths with anti-inflammatory tannins suitable as oak bark extract (e.g. from the pharmacy).

6. Shower

After a bowel movement briefly shower the anus with cold water and gently pat dry.

7. Marigold ointment

Also the Marigold ("Calendula") has an anti-inflammatory effect, promotes wound healing and cares for the irritated mucous membranes.

8. Other ointments

With a hemorrhoidal disease Treatment with other ointments that contain the following active ingredients may also help:

  • zinc oxide
  • Witch hazel
  • Tannins (e.g. oak bark)
  • Lidocaine & Cortisone (both require a prescription)

Note that creams and ointments relieve the symptoms, but do not cure them. In order to rule out worse causes – i.e. other illnesses – a visit to the doctor is essential.

Hemorrhoid Home Remedies: Things To Avoid

Not every remedy is suitable for treatment. You should better avoid the following alleged home remedies:

  • Laxative: Caution is advised with laxatives, as they can – after prolonged use – make the bowel sluggish and thus threaten to become constipated again. Foods like sauerkraut and prunes have natural laxative properties.
  • Constipating foods: Constipating food, such as B. Sweets and white flour products are also bad for the intestines.
  • Coffee and spicy food: Both of these can irritate the mucous membrane when leaving the intestine – anything but pleasant with a hemorrhoidal disease.
  • Alcohol: Alcohol stimulates blood circulation, which causes the hemorrhoids to swell further and the symptoms worsen.
  • Wet toilet paper: The damp toilet paper can further irritate the hemorrhoids due to its additives – so leave it out and use a damp cloth.

This favors hemorrhoids

It is best to avoid hemorrhoids in the first place. These factors favor hemorrhoids:

  • Constipation: It has already been heard several times – constipation makes haemorrhoid complaints easier due to excessive pressure when defecating.
  • Connective tissue weakness: A congenital weakness of the connective tissue leads to relaxation of the sphincter muscles. However, this only affects a small percentage of those affected.
  • Sedentary lifestyle: Sitting for long periods of time and generally little movement are bad for the bowel. It is therefore important to create balance and encourage bowel movement so that the bowel does not become sluggish.
  • Overweight: Obesity puts a strain on the pelvic floor. The weight presses on the rectum and complicates the blood circulation – this can enlarge the vessels in the anal area. Even if it doesn't work overnight: Losing weight through a healthy diet and exercise is the best way to reduce excess weight.
