Piracy continues to make waves in the film industry, with a constantly changing list of films highly sought after by illegal downloaders.
In 2023, data sharing platforms pirate movies experienced record attendance, despite constant repressive measures from the authorities. According to a study by MUSO and Kearney, the video piracy industry recorded no less than 141 billion visits, marking an increase of approximately 10% from the previous year. The United States and India stand out as the largest contributors, each accounting for 11% of global traffic, with India showing a spectacular growth of 80%.
Faced with this rise in piracy, new measures are being put in place. In France, for example, 28 download sites and illegal streaming services are being targeted by legal action, including notorious names like YggTorrent. At the same time, the European Commission adopted new recommendations aimed at strengthening the fight against counterfeiting and piracy, in particular targeting small-time offenders. These initiatives suggest tougher actions against piracywith an emphasis on collaboration between rights holders, service providers and authorities, in order to eradicate this scourge.
