The authorities rely on an increasingly wide variety of radars to punish offenders. The latest is urban radar, capable of monitoring the speed of road users, but also of fining drivers who run red lights.
Lots of cabins for just a few radars
The first urban radars were installed in 2021, but until then they only played a deterrent role. From this Tuesday, January 16, 2024, they will be able to issue fines. However, not everyone will be active. In fact, out of the hundred cabins currently installed, only around twenty will be equipped in turn with said radar, following a decoy logic.
The devices are supplied by Idemia and Parifex. The North of the territory receives Parifex Nomad radars and the South receives Idemia MESTAcompact, very compact and which can be attached to existing street furniture, on any type of mast. They are therefore very discreet, but are announced by mini-panels located upstream, 20 to 30 m from the radar.
For the moment, these cabins will be used to control speed or crossing red lights, but not both at the same time, although the Parifex model is technically capable of this.
The urban areas of Belfort, Montbéliard, Toulouse and Marseille are already equipped with these new radars. They will perform different tasks there. In Marseille, the cabins will only control crossings of red lights for the moment. Speeding is therefore not immediately affected. In Belfort, of the nineteen cabins installed, five will be equipped simultaneously with a radar in turn. Four of them will control speed and one will sanction running red lights.
