Tuition fees are high and continue to increase year after year, so many parents are waiting for the back-to-school allowance to help them cover their expenses. Some of them may be eligible for other, lesser-known aid that could make a difference. What are they?
While many French people are on holiday, some of them probably already have their eyes fixed on the back to school scheduled for next month, with the purchase of supplies and equipment, transportation costs and after-school care costs in the background, which can be expensive. Last year, the Confédération syndicale des familles (CSF) sounded the alarm by confirming in a report that the cost of schooling for a child, regardless of their level, had increased on average by 11.3% compared to the previous year. For schoolchildren (primary), it was necessary to expect to pay approximately 233 euros (22.6%), 371 euros (+3.63%) for middle school students and up to 427 euros (+3.14%) for a high school student. Same again in 2024!

In fact, for RMC The Association for the Defense, Education and Information of Consumers (ADEIC) suggested in June that we should expect a new budget increase in 2024but “a little less strong than in 2023”. “This is due to the sharp rises in the price of raw materials and energy, which are still being passed on to sales prices and therefore to consumers.”suggested the general secretary of Adeic Julie Vanhille. Parents feel it and some of them have already taken out their calculators. “Between my electricity bills and the back-to-school costs to anticipate, we’re not going on vacation this year. We’ll just have to go out in the department, on the beach.”tells us Audrey M., single mother of a 10-year-old child who is preparing to start sixth grade in Sainte-Pazanne (Loire-Atlantique).

National and departmental scholarships
The forty-year-old is eligible for the Back-to-School Allowance which must be paid from August 20. But, for her, “it’s very late” given the amounts she has to pay in advance, particularly for registering for public transport, which she is nevertheless happy to be able to “pay in installments”. For her, next winter could turn out to be “difficult” and she is preparing to have to juggle with sport-money. Like others, she has undoubtedly looked into the conditions for awarding the Back-to-School Allowance and its fluctuating amount between €416.40 and €454.60 depending on the age of the child. But she can count on others little-known aids which could help him finance his daughter Léa’s education.
