THE Content-generating AIs now tackle video games with MarioGPT which creates levels Super Mario Bros. from a text.

A group of developers from the University of Copenhagen has thus created a sort of Super Mario Maker run by an AI using GPT-2 as a model and driven by nothing less than the cult original game Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels.

Super Mario Maker for the (not too) dummies

Using MarioGPT, at least at its embryonic stage, requires a little technical knowledge. The team behind the project has thus shared on a dedicated Github page, quoted in source below, the instructions for creating levels Super Mario Bros. thanks to its AI model.

Contrary to tools like DALL-E or Midjourney, it does indeed require a bit of work upstream and knowing how to handle code before allowing MarioGPT to create levels from text.

The tool will then interpret the written text and transform it into a series of ordinary characters. Once this information has been digested, it will reproduce it in the form of a level. The team of developers behind the project was thus able to generate more than 250 unique levels, some examples of which can be seen in the image below.

A project that needs mushrooms to grow

Being a research project for fun, MarioGPT is still far from being finalized. The developers have indeed chosen for model GPT-2 “ just to see if it could work “. By their own admission, this generation isn’t perfect, but we think it’s an encouraging first step to creating more complex, yet playable levels “.

As it stands, MarioGPT indeed has a lack of variety in the generated elements. As discussed above, budding AI-assisted level creators only have a few platforming models, the traditional tips, and a single enemy model.

However, given the popularity of mario which no longer needs to be proven, that MarioGPT is in danger of rapidly growing a lot, and even going viral. At least provided that Nintendo does not put its grain of salt.
