The Game Awards 2023 is probably the most anticipated video game ceremony of the year. A year full of big games!
As every year, the nominees are chosen by a jury drawn from major players in the sector. Industry professional, journalist, press organization, personalities… The Gameblog editorial team had the opportunity to cast their vote on the games that would be included in the many categories of the Game Awards 2023. Like Elden Ring or God of War (2018), Baldur’s Gate 3 garners a crazy number of nominations: he is nominated in no less than eight categories. Its success and its quality largely explain this feat, but it is an impressive score, especially when we know that it was made by Larian. Yes, we are still facing an independent studio which has given itself the means to become a big name, a very big name.
However, what is even more astonishing is the presence of Alan Wake 2 in the same number of sections. The game has just been released, and its proposition is so strong that it has also managed to propel itself into eight categories. Remedy has always been a bit of a special case, and like Larian, it’s a company that has finally managed to find its place among the nominees for Game of the Year. They will have to face juggernauts like Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom or Super Mario Bros Wonder, which is not an easy thing.
But the announcement of the candidates also caused general surprise, for several reasons. Already, you will surely have noticed the absence of one game in particular: Starfield. Yes, Bethesda’s latest was only offered a place in the Best RPG section. That said, the presence of certain games in very specific categories has also raised questions among players. Typically, Dave the Diver is in Best Independent, even though it is made by a big company. As for Cities Skylines 2, it still manages to slip into Best Simulation Game despite a more than disastrous launch.
