After a first test last February, Google seems to be back on track by offering a new interface for its application Maps on Android. This update will focus on a more readable and ergonomic interface.

At the end of last year, the Mountain View firm proposed an update to Google Maps users aimed at better protecting their privacy. More recently, we learned that the very popular mapping application would be able to connect to satellites when you don’t have a network. Continuing its excellent momentum, Google is now working on a new interface for Google Maps whose deployment should (we hope) not take too long.

Google Maps: a cleaner and more map-centric interface

Discovered several weeks ago, this redesign emphasizes the readability of the map by swapping full-screen interfaces for superimposed inserts. The latter, inspired by Apple Maps some would say, allow you to keep an eye on the map at all times. It will therefore no longer be necessary to navigate through multiple screens to find the information you need.

In addition, the inserts close easily thanks to a dedicated button located at the top right and now have rounded corners, as you can see in the images below.

One of the major points of this redesign concerns the route search. Now the top area of the screen focuses only on the start and end point entry fields. The navigation options (car, public transport, bicycle, etc.) have been moved to the bottom of the screen for better accessibility on smartphones, as highlighted by our colleagues at 9to5Google.

A global deployment still pending

Currently, this new Google Maps interface is only accessible to a limited number of users under Android (version 11.127.x). This would be a server-side update, which would explain its limited deployment. Google has not yet officially communicated on the publication of this redesign at the time of writing these lines.

It now remains to be seen whether this new design will be more widely offered to users (including those on iOS) and whether it will truly stand out from the current interface.
