Here is the number of years that we spend staring at our phone (and it's worrying)

We spend a lot (too much) time on our phone. And this study confirms it.

A quick trip to Instagram when you wake up, a meditation session via our app before sleeping … We use it everywhere, all the time, for any reason, whether at home, in transport, in the street, in bed, at work, even at the table. The smartphone is omnipresent in our lives. But do you really know how many years you spend staring at your phone screen?

Millennials are the ones who use their smartphones the most

According to a study carried out among 1000 people by WhistleOut, a website specializing in the comparison of mobile plans, we pass close to nine years on our phone. In total, this equates to 76,500 hours of use. WhistleOut also studied the generations who use their smartphones the most every day. Unsurprisingly, it is the millennials (born between 1984-1996 approximately) who prevail over the other generations with a daily record of 3.7 hours. Generation X (born between 1966 and 1976) is just behind with 3 hours per day. Finally, the baby boomers (born between 1946 and 1964) spend about 2.5 hours staring at their smartphone screens, which is not negligible either. A digital detox is essential, right?

How to limit the time spent in front of your phone?

The site offers some simple solutions to dramatically reduce the time spent in front of screens, especially at bedtime. Rather than scrolling for half an hour on your Instagram feed in front of a mediocre series, prefer to listen to a podcast. A good way to entertain yourself before going to sleep, without absorbing the blue light from the screens. Another solution: use an application and internet blocker. With apps like Freedom, you can select which apps or websites you want to block, and set a duration. Finally, last more radical advice: put your phone out of reach. Get rid of electronic devices in your bedroom at bedtime and invest in a good old-fashioned alarm clock! You'll see, it's not that bad.
