Here is Volvo’s new electric car, which plans to send heavy

After the EX90 and EX30, Volvo announces the upcoming arrival of a brand new electric car. The latter will take the form of a unique minivan, which will be primarily designed for China. But nothing excludes an arrival in Europe a little later.

Volvo has been busy lately. If the firm already offers two electric models in its range, namely the C40 and the XC40 Recharge, it is still a bit light. Indeed, the firm plans to no longer market thermal cars from 2030, five years before the deadline imposed by the European Union.

A unique silhouette

It is in this context that the Swedish company lifted the veil a few months earlier on its great EX90, which will eventually replace the current XC90 still marketed as a hybrid. More recently, it was also the turn of the small EX30 to see the light of day, offering a new alternative to the two compact SUVs mentioned above.

But the manufacturer obviously cannot rely solely on this. That’s why he’s getting ready to unveil a brand new model over the next few months. An announcement that is not really a surprise, since some rumors were already talking about the arrival of a new vehicle within the range of the Scandinavian brand. But what is it?

Last July, prototypes of a future electric minivan were seen in China, arousing the curiosity of Internet users. And we now have the heart net, it is the next model of Volvo that it is. This information has indeed been confirmed by the manufacturer itself in a press release just published. And good news, the latter is accompanied by a short video.

This allows us to discover very partially the one who will bear the name of EM90. A name which already gives us some indications on this vehicle, which should display a template close to the EX90. As a reminder, the latter is more than five meters long and measures 1.96 meters wide by 1.74 meters high. A beautiful baby in short, with, as a reminder, a weight of more than 2.8 tons on the scale.

A livable minivan

But this time, no SUV since this newcomer is described as an MPV (Multi Purpose Vehicle), better known as “monospace” with us. If this segment is no longer really fashionable in our region, this EM90 is in fact not intended to please us. At least not immediately. And for good reason, Volvo specifies that it is the Chinese market which is first targeted.

Orders will open there from November 12, date of its official revelation. However, it is not excluded that the latter will one day make the road to us. The most convincing example is for example the new Denza D9, a minivan designed for the Chinese market, but which will finally arrive in Europe at the Munich show in September. A perfect rival for the Swede.

Zeekr 009
Zeekr 009

For the moment, information about it is still scarce, but we already know that the latter will bet above all on its habitability. Moreover, it should share certain characteristics with the Zeekr 009, the firm also being part of the Geely group. We should therefore logically find the SEA base and the same engine, with two 271 horsepower engines, front and back. And a weight of more than 2.8 tons too…

Two Qilin CTP 3.0 batteries should be offered, with a capacity of 116 or 140 kWh, offering a range of around 660 kilometers according to the WLTP cycle. It remains to know the maximum power and the charging time, while this pack can in theory be filled in ten minutes on a fast terminalsuch as the 500 kW one developed by Nio and installed in Sweden and China.
