The number of withdrawals continues to grow. At the end of 2021, France had 17 million withdrawals, i.e. 100,000 more than at the end of 2020. By adding survivors’ pensions which are most often intended for widows, 18million people received a retirement pension at the end of 2021. Among them, 16.5 million reside in France, and 1.5 million are abroad, according to the new annual survey published this Friday by DREES, the statistical service of social ministers.

The purchasing power of pensions is falling

All schemes combined, the average pension under direct entitlement is 1,531 euros gross per month for pensioners residing in France, i.e. 1420 euros net per month. This pension has increased by 1.5% compared to that of 2020, which was 1,341 euros net. But in practice, the purchasing power of pensions decreases by 1.3% due to inflation, which was then 2.8%.

This decline in the purchasing power of the average pension year-on-year in 2021 follows a slight increase in 2020 (+0.4%). The median standard of living of retirees remains slightly higher than that of the general population, explain the authors of the study.

Among other lessons, the pension gap between men and women is still as wide: 40% less for the latter.

Since 2010, the retirement age has increased by 2 years and 1 month

Furthermore, unsurprisingly, the retirement age is constantly rising. He now reaches 62 years and 7 months for people residing in France, i.e. two years and one month more since 2010. At the end of 2021, 27% of people aged 61 residing in France are already retired, while 15% of those aged 65 are not yet pensioners, specifies the press release of the Dress.

These figures are set to change even more markedly in the months and years to come, following the implementation on 1 September 2023 of the pension reform. This provides in particular for the legal retirement age to be raised from 62 to 64 by 2030.
