Since May, the 49-euro ticket has been intended to attract more people to buses and trains. But not only the commute is cheaper, but also travel – you can even travel abroad.

The 9-euro ticket was a hit and it will be interesting to see how well the 49-euro ticket goes down with the public. But for 49 euros per month, you can not only drive to work cheaply. Travel is also possible by train and, as a travel expert shows, even abroad.

But for 49 euros per month, you can not only drive to work cheaply. Travel is also possible by train and, as a travel expert shows, even abroad. On her YouTube channel, Steffi Forsch (aka “Zugfräulein”) shows 3 ingenious route tips abroad that you can use with the 49-euro ticket. We also present a map showing all routes abroad for the Deutschlandticket.

Travel abroad with a 49-euro ticket

Just so there are no misunderstandings, the 49-euro ticket is not called the Deutschlandticket for nothing. In the FAQs of the federal government there is the point “Where should the Germany ticket be valid?” :

The Deutschlandticket will be valid nationwide and will enable Germany-wide journeys in public transport and regional rail transport from all participating transport companies, state tariffs and transport associations as well as in non-federated areas. Travelers can therefore use all buses and trains of public regional and local transport throughout Germany. Long-distance transport and journeys in first class are excluded.

But train lazy Steffi explains why you can also travel abroad for 49 euros a month: the so-called border tariff points are decisive. These are billing boundaries between two neighboring state railways. However, they are not on the actual state borders, but at train stations.

In some neighboring countries, there are German border tariff points abroad and therefore the transport tariff of the Deutsche Bahn applies to them and thus from May also the 49-euro ticket.

You can travel to these countries

On a practical map on Google Maps you can see all the travel destinations that you can reach with the 49-euro ticket. Short trips close to the border in several countries are possible:

  • Netherlands
  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • France
  • Luxembourg
  • Poland
  • Denmark
  • Switzerland
  • Czech Republic

Simply click on one of the destinations on the map or select the desired route on the left-hand side of the screen. There is certainly a lot to discover along the routes.

Beautiful travel destinations for the Deutschlandticket

According to Zugfräulein, traveling abroad with the 49-euro ticket works in the following countries: Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, France, Luxembourg and Poland. In some of these countries there are even several different border tariff stations. The top destinations according to the travel expert:

  • Salzburg: The picturesque town is also suitable for stays of several days. With the Bavarian Regiobahn you can reach Salzburg from Munich in less than two hours.
  • Luxembourg: Small but nice, with great castles and hiking opportunities, the capital is worth a visit. With a 49-euro ticket, for example, you can take a regional train or buses and trains from the Trier transport association. Extra tip: public transport has been free of charge in Luxembourg for several years.
  • Basel: Basel is a charming and beautiful city that is very suitable for a small city break. You can either take the regional train via Weil am Rhein (RB7, RB27) or the Interregio Express via Friedrichshafen.

In your blog Steffi Forsch collects even more tips, such as destinations in France and the Netherlands, which can also be reached with the 49-euro ticket.
