Apple has just announced the arrival of a new feature for application developers on iOS. Now, if the auto-renewal of a subscription fails due to a billing issue, a window will appear directly in the app to help the user update their payment method.
While iOS 17 could introduce a huge change in Apple’s policy, the Apple brand has just made a major announcement for application developers.
A window in the app to update your payment methods
Starting this summer, Apple will provide them with a new tool that will prove extremely practical in building customer loyalty. Indeed, if the automatic renewal of a subscription on an app fails due to a billing problem, a window will appear directly on the app in question to allow users to immediately update their payment method.
According to the manufacturer, developers will not need to act for the window provided by iOS to appear in the app. Apple explains that this tool has just been added to the many existing features of the App Store for help retain subscribers.
Apple already offers several tools to retain users
“For example, if a subscription is currently attempting to complete a billing, Apple uses machine learning to optimize payment attempts to achieve the best possible collection rate.” writes Apple in its official press release.
The Cupertino company also refers to the “Billing Grace Period”which allows customers to continue to enjoy their subscription while Apple attempts to collect payment. Developers who wish to try out this window can do so in the Sandbox. They can also test whether the window is delayed or suppressed using messages and check how it displays in StoreKit before implementing it.
However, it is specified that users will need to be on iOS 16.4 or iPadOS 16.4 to see this window appear. As a reminder, we already know the list of iPhones that will not be compatible with iOS 17.
Indeed, with iOS 16, Apple has stopped tracking iPhone 6s, iPhone 7 and iPhone SE. In fact, the next generation should logically be set aside in turn. So, iPhone X, iPhone 8 and 8 Plusall three released in 2017, should not benefit from the new version of the operating system either.
