The Galaxy S24s are currently being tested at the Phonandroid editorial office. We used Galaxy AI, the artificial intelligence embedded in phones, to transcribe one of our meetings. Things didn’t really go as planned…
That’s it, the Galaxy S24, S24+ and S24 Ultra have arrived at the Phonandroid editorial office. Obviously, we are going to put them through the grill to determine their strengths and weaknesses. One of the big new features of this 2024 range, it is the inclusion of artificial intelligence within One UI: Galaxy AI. We started using it and the result was… let’s say astonishing.
One of the flagship features of Galaxy AI is the ability to transcribe audio files in writing, then produce a concise point-by-point summary. On paper, the functionality is attractive: you have had a long meeting and the phone immediately gives you the essential things to remember. We tried the experiment in the editorial office and everything didn’t really go as planned.
Galaxy AI still has a lot to learn
So we held our traditional Thursday editorial conference, but recorded our conversation on the Galaxy S24 Ultra. For twenty minutes, we talked about planning for the week, but also about organization in relation to the Xbox conference on January 18. At this meeting, there were four of us (Bruno, Sam, Simon and yours truly). Once the audio file was recorded, we asked the integrated AI to transcribe it all to us in writing. First surprise: the process takes several minutes during which the phone is not usable. Once the voice is transformed into text, the second surprise arrives. Galaxy AI doesn’t seem to have understood a word of our conversation. If parts of sentences are present as they were said, 90% of the transcription seems to navigate by sight.
For example, (referring to S24) a “A getting started or a tutorial is already a small piece of disguised testing from which we can reuse elements for the big test, but that’s my opinion” becomes a “spend so much on hand yes in fact. It’s tuteaux and yes it’s that or that maybe a disguised test if you want then you’ll see later. It’s my delicious.” Even more, the AI is supposed to recognize the interlocutors according to their voice. Although there were four of us, only three are present in the oral transcription, the Galaxy S24 often confusing Simon and Bruno, although their voice is very distinct. Fortunately, this transcription can be read with the audio on top, with the words spoken highlighted. A way to spot errors or to understand who is speaking.

We then asked the AI to give us a summary of this meeting, point by point. The result is more surprising, since certain passages are well transcribed, with distinct parts divided into three sub-parts. We can for example see this in the visual, in which the passage about the Xbox conference has been clearly understood. If there is good, there is also less good: artificial intelligence has shown us a whole point about our food preferences, mentioning seafood, mushrooms and even “large cooked oysters”. A lunar paragraph, since we have absolutely not mentioned food; listening back to our meeting, we don’t even know what he could be referring to. This is not the only bizarre passage, since the AI, for example, transcribed a conversation affirming that it is possible to buy Samsung from Amazon.
Brief, our first experience with Galaxy AI was a bit difficult. If we carried out this test for experimental purposes, we do not see ourselves using it naturally, as the final result is unusable. However, it should be noted that this functionality remains new, and therefore very perfectible. We can hope for improvements in the coming weeks or months. During our test of the terminals, we will obviously try the other possibilities offered by AI, such as summarizing articles online or even instant translation. It is especially on the photo that we will be vigilant, Galaxy AI promising to correct the photos taken with the phone. In the meantime, we wanted to share with you our first fun experience with the S24’s on-board artificial intelligence. Full testing is coming very soon.
