Half of the WWDC 2024 keynote should be taken up by the presentation of Apple Intelligence. Prepare for a slew of AI features on iPhone, iPad and Mac.
As the WWDC 2024 keynote fast approaches, the journalist from Bloomberg, Mark Gurman, always well informed about Apple’s plans, shares some juicy information on what should be the main announcement of the event. He indeed mentions an “Apple Intelligence” project which should be presented by the Apple firm.
“Apple to announce plans to deeply integrate AI into its core apps and features — while reiterating its commitment to privacy and security», writes the specialist journalist. Relying on his anonymous sources, he explains that this new artificial intelligence system would therefore be called Apple Intelligence and would be used on iPhone, iPad and Mac.
At first glance, this seems pretty close to Samsung’s vision with its Galaxy AI features. And Apple would not go with the back of the spoon. Mark Gurman estimates that announcements around new Apple Intelligence features would take up half of the keynote. It promises to be very dense.
Precautions around Apple Intelligence
On the program, expect to see Apple integrate its AI functions into as many applications as possible. But be careful, the brand’s communication will mainly focus on improvements aimed at improving users’ daily lives and not necessarily on generative AI on photos and videos for example.
Good to know: the AI options that Apple will push will be optional. It will be up to you to activate them if you wish to take advantage of them. Moreover, the Apple brand should take a lot of time to clearly explain all the measures it has taken to ensure the protection of users’ private information. This is not trivial: some of the expected artificial intelligence tools should require a connection to remote servers instead of running locally.
An overview of the functions
According to Mark Gurman, one of the main areas of Apple Intelligence will revolve around summaries of articles and web pages in Safari, but also emails, SMS or meeting minutes.
Unsurprisingly, AI should also be involved in suggesting intelligent responses to save time. The Siri assistant is not left out either and would be able to handle more complex requests.
It doesn’t stop there. The Mail application should take inspiration from Gmail by being able to intelligently categorize received messages, the Photos app would take photo editing capabilities further and voice memos would taste automatic transcription. Even emojis would be entitled to AI since it would be possible to generate them.
Association with OpenAI and limitations
Apple’s AI functionalities would rely both on the company’s in-house technologies and on a collaboration with OpenAI, in particular to power an intelligent conversational agent like ChatGPT.
Be careful though. Mark Gurman corroborates information that was already circulating: you would need at least an iPhone 15 or a device equipped with the Apple M1 chip to take advantage of these new AI functions.
