In his last number special issue dated August 2023, titled Cosmetics Toxic-free beautythe magazine 60 Million consumers analyzes 154 everyday cosmetic products to highlight the harmful ingredients that we unknowingly use in our beauty routine.
After revealing the best foundation on the market, the cleanest one, the magazine published by the National Consumer Institute took an interest in another makeup basic: lipstick, whose sales increased by 49% after the covid crisis when we wore less according to the Circana firm. And the observation is rather alarming: while lipstick is supposed to be composed of a simple mixture of pigments and a fatty substance, most lipsticks contain a lot of ingredients which make its formula much less healthy in order to to promise moisturizing effects, long-lasting hold or even resistance to friction. “They add hydrating hyaluronic acid, lipid agents to nourish, antioxidant vitamins, mattifying powder, etc.”, explains, in fact, Marie Dehlinger, scientific communication consultant, specializing in the regulation and safety of cosmetic products. Worse, some of these substances would be “toxic” And “prohibited in food” even though women ingest on average “the equivalent of four sticks” of lipstick per year.

Lipstick, what are the toxic ingredients that cause problems?
Among the problematic substances, we mainly find titanium dioxide (CI 77891 or titanium dioxide) with potentially harmful effects carcinogens which has been banned in food since 2020 in France, as well as throughout the European Union since 2022, but which is still authorized in cosmetics. “All the lipsticks in our selection contain it” precise 60 Million consumers.
