This Sunday, the show “Turbo” broadcast on M6 will celebrate its 35th anniversary. A rare longevity on television that the show shares with its presenter, Dominique Chapatte, present since the launch of the car show. To celebrate this anniversary, the channel presents a double programming. On the program, the best moments of the show over the last 3 decades before a special show at 11:20 a.m. with a distinguished guest: Karim Benzema.
“Karim Benzema knew the show from his earliest years with his father, like many others, sitting in the armchair watching the show. And then, little by little, fortune coming, he took to passion for very, very, very beautiful cars that go very, very, very, very fast. And suddenly, he was the perfect client”, jokes the presenter.
“A long negotiation”
Very rare in the media, the presence of the Real Madrid player was the subject of long negotiations, explains Dominique Chapatte: “It was a long negotiation. In addition to that, negotiations thwarted by the Covid because he had Covid cases around him and so he didn’t want to take any risks, which is completely normal when you are one of the greatest players in the world.”
And Dominique Chapatte assures him, despite the past of the Real Madrid striker, all the subjects could be discussed: “I did not make any promises to him (note: on the subjects discussed), nor before because I did not I didn’t hear on the phone or on the spot where Karim or his agent could have told me that there are points that we are not addressing”.
The meeting between the presenter and the football player took place at the Real Madrid training center, underlines Dominique Chapatte: “After training, he arrived super relaxed. he was going to look at his watch as certain actors or comedians that I have been able to meet have already done who say to themselves ‘they are very nice but I will give them one or two hours’, and spend his time on the telephone, it was neither” with Karim Benzema.
A car collector
Father of a family, the striker of the France team prefers to drive quietly on the road and leaves his passion for speed on the circuit, which did not fail to surprise the presenter of “Turbo”. A passion which is however revealed in his car collection, underlines Dominique Chapatte: “He has quite a lot of things in his garage. He notably has a Bugatti Chiron and a Bugatti Veyron, the latest being the Chiron. But he is been through a lot of good cars. And what’s funny is that he kept a mad love for his first Mini”.
And to add: “He’s a kid, frankly, he’s a teenager. He has an approach (to the automobile), he is amazed by this world”, explains the journalist.
