Hidden functions: There's more to iOS 14 than you think

Apple has built in some interesting functions in iOS 14 that many users are probably not even aware of because they are only mentioned briefly or not at all in the description of the operating system. ntv.de presents the most useful hidden features.

Apple's new operating system brings freely placeable widgets, an app library and other innovations that immediately catch the eye. But iOS 14 offers many more new functions that Apple does not give the big bang or ignore in the description of the operating system. Among those small but subtle changes are a few very useful features to be aware of.

Apps down from the home screen

With iOS 14, Apple introduced an app media library that Android users have long appreciated. All installed applications are clearly organized in it. Nevertheless, after the update, many users still have apps spread over several home screens. If you have all the applications on the first screen that you need regularly, you can remove all the others, you still have them at hand in the media library.

You can remove entire home screens, the apps there wander into the media library.

You don't have to move every single app into the media library, you can clean entire home screens in one go. To do this, press an empty spot on the display and wait for the apps to start shaking. If you then tap on the field with the dots above the dock, an overview opens where you simply tick the home screens that you no longer need.

To prevent the screens from filling up again with applications that are rarely used, go to the settings and select Home screen the hook at App library only. Recently installed applications can be found in the media library under Recently added.

Knock Knock

A feature that will not only delight lazy users is the ability to start various functions with two or three taps on the back. You can find it in the settings in the Accessibility at the bottom. There are an amazing number of things to choose from there. Among other things, it is possible to regulate the volume, take a screenshot or execute a shortcut. The knock function is apparently only available on newer devices without a home button.

Hidden photos really invisible

If you take photos with your iPhone that you really don't want anyone else to see, you could hide these images earlier in iOS using the Share menu. They could no longer be found under People, Places, Family, or any other album, but they still had their own folder Hidden. Under iOS 14 you can now hide your secret pictures properly. There is a new option for this in the settings of the Photos app Hidden album. If you set the slider to Off, the album is no longer displayed.

Picture-in-picture on iPhones

As before on iPads, you can now continue watching videos that have been scaled down on iPhones using other applications. To do this, you simply have to swipe up from the bottom of a clip in full screen. This only works with videos in Apple apps, but not with YouTube.

Search emojis in keyboard

Android users may cough in amusement, but so far it has not been possible to find emojis with keywords in the iOS keyboard. But now there is finally a corresponding search field where, for example, entering "Autumn" will display withered leaves or an apple pie.

Sound detection

You can search for emojis in the iOS 14 keyboard.

Under SettingsAccessibility can be found in iOS 14 the Sound detection. There you can activate various alarms, animal, household and person noises from fire to baby cries, which the iPhone then automatically pays attention to. If it detects one of them, it displays a corresponding message. The function is primarily intended for people with impaired hearing, but it is also useful when listening to music through headphones. Important: If the sound detection is active, you cannot call up the digital assistant with the voice command "Hey Siri".

Eye contact in Facetime

When making video calls, sooner or later you involuntarily look at the display because the person you are talking to can be seen there. But then you don't look each other in the eye, which always seems a little strange. At least in Facetime there is now a remedy, because from now on an artificial eye contact is created there, even if you stare at the screen. The function is already activated, otherwise you can find it almost at the bottom in the Facetime settings.

Private WiFi address

You can finally assign image titles in the Photos app.

If Apple repeatedly points out in its advertising that it attaches great importance to the privacy and security of users, then that is absolutely correct. With iOS 14 comes the Private WiFi address. This means that each WLAN has its own MAC address, which should make it more difficult to track a user across multiple networks. This function is also preset. You can find them if you tap the active network in the WLAN list.

The right way around selfies

It's strange why Apple is only now introducing this: If you take a selfie with your iPhone in front of a poster, the writing appears mirror-inverted. Now you can in the camera settings Mirror front camera switch on and the problem is solved.

Volume QuickTake

Sometimes, while trying to take a photo, you realize that the scene really deserves a video. In this case, you can now press a volume button longer on newer devices from the iPhone XS / XR to start the recording. With older devices, this only works via the virtual trigger on the display, as before.

Captions

Finally, it's finally possible to give pictures a title in the Photos app. To do this, swipe up a recording in full-screen mode and then see the text field. The tracks are synchronized between Apple devices via the iCloud and you can search for them in the Photos app.
