If someone gets your cell phone unlocked, they can see directly on WhatsApp who you are texting with. This can be uncomfortable – for example in a secret flirt. Luckily, there are several ways to hide WhatsApp chats. We introduce them to you.

Possibility 1: Screen Guard app against looking over your shoulder

The free “Screen Guard for WhatsApp” app on Android phones helps against obtrusive neighbors at school or on buses and trains. You can use it to darken part of the screen so that it is not clear who you are texting with.

Option 2: Rename contact

Another easier way to hide a WhatsApp chat is to rename the contact in your address book. However, the true identity of the contact can of course be read out of the chat by curious people or determined via the profile picture. Therefore, this solution does not offer 100% protection from prying eyes.

Option 3: Move chat to archive

WhatsApp also offers the option of archiving a chat. This is then saved in a separate folder in the chat list and does not appear in the main menu when new messages arrive – unless you change this setting.

However, since the archive is accessible via a button at the top above the chat list, this method does not offer much protection if someone gets their hands on your unlocked cell phone. We would therefore advise you to also secure your WhatsApp chats with fingerprints.
